Core exercises are an important part of an overall fitness routine, leading to improved balance and stability. It also helps to train the muscles in your pelvis, hips, lower back and abdomen to work in tandem. There are a variety of exercises one can perform in a pool to help strengthen the core muscles.

In this instructional exercise video from SwimEx, see how to use a kickboard to engage the abdominals. The push-and-pull style exercise also encourages proper posture and stabilization.

Why Kickboards

You can start with any type of exercise equipment for resistance such as barbells or different size balls, but for a wider surface area and to make the exercise more challenging, the kickboard is the ideal choice.

Most kickboards are composed of waterproof plastic or a type of foam. Some come with an ergonomic strap, which is helpful for anyone suffering with wrist or carpal tunnel problems.

Expert Advice

Leslie Becki, MS, ATC, CSCS collegiate swimmer and swim coach for SwimEx, says this type of aqua-aerobic exercise is an easy and effective way to tighten the core, “It is excellent for just about anyone – from the frail patient to the pro-athelete. “ Becki says the aquatic enthusiast can also perform the same exercise using a med ball or paddles, for variation.

How To Perform The Exercise

The standing kickboard press and pull shown in the video helps work the chest, back, core and oblique muscles. Submerge your body in the pool so that the water is shoulder height. Hold the board in a vertical position at chest height. Begin with your elbows bent. Then, extend your arms and push the board away from your body. Bend your arms and return with control. Contract your abdominal muscles to stabilize your upper torso. Perform 10 repetitions, and then do the same movement but hold the board to the right side (and then left) (bullfighter stance) as you walk into and away from the current. Perform 10 repetitions to the right and 10 to the left. Watch the video above for a detailed explanation. Another exercise to work the oblique muscles would be to stand sideways to the current while holding the kickboard away from the body with arms extended.

Considerations

Becki says the exercise can be performed in a regular swimming pool, but a swim-in-place pool can offer even more flexibility and faster results for athletes and patients. “In this video, you’ll notice that the current flow can be adjusted, offering the opportunity to increase the intensity of the workout. You can face forward against current, or have your back against the current.  Utilize all current angles, in order to maximize stabilization for all core musculature.”

Benefits Of A Swim Spa

Becki says the kickboard exercise can be performed in a regular swimming pool, but a swim-in-place pool can offer even more flexibility and faster results for athletes and patients.  “In this video, you’ll notice that the current flow in the SwimEx pool can be adjusted, offering the opportunity to increase the intensity of the workout.”

Here’s a blast from the past. Back in 1987, SwimEx was featured in Sports Illustrated magazine for reinventing the wheel (or paddle wheel) and winning praise for designing a cutting edge swim spa for top athletes. Here’s the article titled “Staying In The Swim At Home”. A fun read:

“When it comes to distance training indoors, runners on treadmills and cyclists on stationary bikes no longer have a technological edge over their aquatic counterparts. The concept of swimming in place—explored by enterprising spa designers—has been refined by a company called SwimEx, Inc.

In the late 1970s several spa builders began lengthening the typical hot tub or spa and adding large hydrotherapy jets that produced streams of water and air strong enough to hold a swimmer in place. Twelve to 18 feet long, 7 to 8 feet wide and selling for as little as $6,500, “swim spas” are now manufactured by a dozen or so companies across the country. They cost far less than a full-sized indoor pool, but they also have their drawbacks. Most notable are the teeth-rattling turbulence and the disappointingly narrow stream of resistance that most of the jets produce. My experience with the typical swim spa is that you need unwavering concentration, tight goggles and half an hour of practice just to get the hang of it.

The SwimEx pool is different. Made of stainless steel and carrying a hefty $20,000 price tag, it is 12 feet long, 67 feet wide and 4 feet deep, holds 3,200 gallons of water and operates on a simple principle. “The secret,” says Stanley Charren, a Cambridge, Mass., entrepreneurial engineer who was one of the three founding partners, “is to move a lot of water at low pressure instead of a small amount at high pressure.”

There are no jets to be found in the SwimEx, only five-foot-wide grates on either end below the waterline. An enclosed paddle wheel at the back draws water off the surface and propels it through a channel underneath the pool to the front, where it flows back out. In contrast to a swim spa’s small area of churning water, nearly the entire surface of the SwimEx is in motion, like a gentle stream.

Swimming in place against the steady flow is as natural as doing laps in a pool, only better. Since you never reach the wall, you don’t break your rhythm to turn every 25 yards, and you get a better workout in a shorter time. With the turn of a knob, the speed of the flow can easily be adjusted from less than 1 mph to close to 4 mph, a range good enough for all but the fastest competitors.

Charren, 62, has a chronically bad back, and his orthopedist suggested that he take up swimming. But he was soon discouraged because it was taking him two hours to swim for half an hour, with travel and locker-room time figured in. Charren tried a swim spa and was disappointed. He inquired about indoor lap pools and was told that it would cost him more than $100,000 to build one. He recalls, “My wife said, ‘Let’s use the money to buy a condo where there’s a pool.’ ”

The Charrens bought the condo, but Stanley kept thinking about an aquatic treadmill. In 1984 he and Sy Mermelstein, a friend and fellow engineer, went to work and, after 17 years of what Mermelstein calls “the classic garage operation” and several hundred thousand dollars, the first SwimEx was ready.

The pool is as well suited to beginners as it is to advanced swimmers, so it should prove valuable as both a teaching and coaching aid. Tillotson-Pearson Inc., a Warren, R.I.—based company that builds fiberglass boats, purchased SwimEx in December and began promoting it, but even before that, the small staff was fielding inquiries from health clubs, chiropractors and corporate fitness centers. But the majority of the potential SwimEx market may well be private consumers—those who want to swim year-round but, like Charren, consider the cost of enclosing a pool prohibitive. Some may not be ready to spend $20,000 on a personal-sized pool, but there will be a fiberglass model sometime this spring that will sell for roughly $14,000.

Now you can put a SwimEx next to your treadmill and stationary bicycle and train for your next triathlon without ever leaving the house.

Jim Harmon once held the Pine Bush (N.Y.) high school record in the 100-yard butterfly.” (source: SI)

In a report published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, scientists from North Carolina found adults physically active on five or more days a week suffered from cold-like symptoms almost half as frequently as those exercising once a week or less.

“Exercise like swimming is fantastic for reducing stress which helps maintain a healthy body.”

The study, which tracked 1,002 adults between 18 and 85-years old over a 12-week period, also found the severity of the symptoms fell by 41% for those who felt fittest and 31% for those who were the most physically active.

The researchers said the results were due to a temporary rise in immune system cells every time the body exercises which led to an increased resistance to viruses and bacteria.

Aerobic exercise and perceived fitness were the most significant factors measured while eating fruit was also linked with a lower frequency of colds.

And ASA Exercise Scientist Ian Freeman admitted eating a meal rich in protein and fibrous carbohydrates immediately after exercise was the best way to maximise immune function.

“Your immune system actually dips during exercise but then raises to a higher level over time,” said Freeman. “Exercise like swimming is fantastic for reducing stress which helps maintain a healthy body.

“But eating the right foods at the right time is also important. Lean protein is excellent for boosting your immune system function and fresh fruit and vegetables will also certainly help.”

Swimming and All-Cause Mortality Risk Compared With Running, Walking, and Sedentary Habits in Men

Swimming, water jogging, and aqua aerobics are lifetime physical activities that provide many health benefits comparable to those of walking and running. Research on the association between swimming and mortality is scarce, however. To evaluate the association between different types of physical activity and all-cause mortality, we studied 40,547 men age 20–90 years who completed a health examination during 1971–2003. Cox proportional-hazards regression was used to estimate the relative risks according to physical activity exposure categories. A total of 3,386 deaths occurred during 543,330 man-years of observation. After adjustment for age, body-mass index, smoking status, alcohol intake, and family history of cardiovascular disease, swimmers had 53%, 50%, and 49% lower all-cause mortality risk than did men who were sedentary, walkers, or runners, respectively (p < .05 for each). Additional adjustment for baseline prevalent diseases did not change the inverse association between different activities and all-cause mortality. In conclusion, swimmers had lower mortality rates than those who were sedentary, walkers, and runners.

Injured Athletes

Some form of rest is often the treatment recommendation for an injured athlete. The rest may be relative rest, in which the athlete reduces the intensity of training or activity, or it may be absolute rest, during which the athlete performs no activity. In either case, rest for an athlete can be problematic. The research of Coyle et al. (1986 and 1984) showed that a significant decline in cardiovascular fitness can result from as little as 3 wk of inactivity. A 14 to 16% decline in maximal oxygen consumption has been documented after 6 wk of rest (Coyle et al., 1986 and 1984). Given that 3 to 6 wk is not an inordinately long period and certainly within the realm of the time needed for recovery from a musculoskeletal injury, the loss of cardiovascular fitness needs to be considered. An athlete may rehabilitate an acute injury only to find that he or she returns to the sport with a significant loss of conditioning. Fortunately, the aquatic environment can help to mitigate some, if not all, of the potential fitness loss.
